Quick Fixes for Upgrading Your Kitchen

Renovating a kitchen can be time consuming and costly but there are always ways to update your kitchen without breaking the bank. If you want to completely renovate your kitchen then contact the expert home kitchen remodeling company, but here are a few tips to update your kitchen on your own:

Countertops – Your countertops can completely change the look of your kitchen. This task doesn’t have to be daunting and it can be done relatively quickly. Strip off your laminate and replace it with an updated laminate or have your stone, cement, or marble counters buffed so they shines like new again. Not only can you replace the laminate but you can also replace the molding around your countertop or just replace a section of your countertop like adding a chopping block to give new life to your countertop. One part of the counter that not everyone thinks of is the backsplash. By adding or replacing your backsplash it can add a whole new personality to your kitchen. Use your imagination and creativity to update your backsplash because the materials and ideas are endless.

Cabinets – Your cabinets help create the overall look and feel of your kitchen so updating them can really change your kitchen’s style. Some kitchen cabinet ideas would be replacing your hardware like knobs, pulls, and hinges, putting a fresh coat of paint on your cabinets or refinishing metal cabinets, put a new face on your doors and drawers to add a new style, replace the panels in your doors (wood styling, glass, steel, etc.) and drawers to update the look, upgrade your molding, or update the inside of your cabinets by replacing the shelves, or add new additions like sections or Lazy Susans.

Floors – Replacing or updating your flooring can be a great do-it-yourself project. If you have some carpet you can pull it up and replace it with hardwood floors, update the stain or add a new finish to your hardwood floors, add new trim or borders, replace the flooring with stone, ceramic, or colored tiles, refinish your stone floors to add more shine, paint your wood floor, add vinyl tiles or vinyl sheeting, or even spruce up your current floor with new rugs.

Appliances – Replacing all of your appliances can be very costly so just spruce up your appliances with new accessories. A lot of appliances have options for replacing the face, hardware, handles/knobs, surfaces and shelves or interior pieces. Check your appliance company’s website or catalogs to see what options are available. If you have older or high-end appliances that just need a touch up you can have the appliance buffed, refinished, painted or recovered to add a new “face” to your appliances. Do some research on companies with experience in the material your appliance is made of to ensure your makeover is done correctly.

All of these ideas can be completed with time and inspiration so make sure to visit your local hardware store for guidance if you want to do this yourself. If you are leery about doing all of this yourself then contact your expert home remodelers for help. A kitchen renovation could boost the resale value of your home whether it be a full renovation or just a fresh coat of paint so explore your options.

Combat Your Rising Energy Bills

During the warm and cold season your bills can really spike due to using the air conditioning, heat, and different appliances. The best way to combat these bills is to safe guard yourself by being smarter with your habits and be aware of the history of your home. If you are interested in improving your home to combat your bills then the first step would be to have an audit done. You can do this yourself or have a professional do the evaluation so you can see exactly where the problems lie.

If you choose not to have an audit completed in your home then there are always other ways to decrease your energy costs. You can take a look at your family’s habit to see where you can decrease energy usage. Consider the little things like turning off the light in a room when you leave, turning down the central air at night, turning off the water while brushing your teeth, changing to energy efficient light bulbs, and using the appliances as little as possible to help reduce your energy costs.

There are simple changes you can make to your home to reduce costs. Replace your curtains with dark curtains to absorb heat, put a water bottle in the back of your toilet to reduce the amount of water used, clean your air filters regularly, replace your shower head with a water regulating head, and even consider painting your rooms a lighter color to reflect light easier.

You can also look at replacing pieces of your home that may be outdated like the windows, door frames, insulation, etc. Those can be the biggest factors of your energy issues. Whether you want to replace these things yourself or if you hire a professional home remodeling and repair company, this will help you move towards decreasing your electric bill.

Appliances can be a big factor in your bills as well. Are your appliances old? Do they use a lot of power? Looking into energy efficient appliances is a good idea because there are so many on the market now. Anything from ovens, to washers and dryers, to water heaters, to refrigerators can be replaced with energy efficient appliances. The Energy Star line of appliances is one of the great lines of appliances because they can reduce your energy costs up to $200+ per year.

A big leap to make your house more efficient is using “green” methods. This can be a more costly than replacing an appliance or a window but the return on investment will be greater over time with eco-friendly efforts. Installing solar panels, eco-friendly materials, or even a windmill can help with reducing energy costs over time.

Reducing energy costs in your home can be time consuming but they can really pay off. Changing habits, simple changes to your home, and home renovations can make a big difference in the long run.

building permits for kitchen renovations

Columbus Home Builders and Renovators

The building and remodeling permit process can be very confusing for anyone. If you live in or around Columbus, Ohio, and need to find out about your permit situation give us a call (614.726.5400) and we’ll try to answer your question.

If you’re interested in kitchen and bath remodeling, or even basement remodeling, you’re probably wondering if it requires a permit. The city of Columbus basically says that any building or addition project requires that permit. A remodeling project also needs one if, and this is important, there are structural changes to the existing building. And nearly every electrical, plumbing, or mechanical job is usually not included in with your building permit request. You’ll have to apply separately for those projects.

Another aspect to consider is that you may also need to submit your project for a commission review if you live in a historical or architectural area. Areas like German Village, Victorian Village, Italian Village, the Brewery District and others around the city have commissions that require a review. The Downtown and University areas also mean special reviews.

We’ve been completing old and new home renovations, building homes and commercial projects, and replacing roofing, siding, windows, and more across the city since 1986. We know the ins and outs of building permits for Columbus area residents and business owners. Cost of Kitchen Renovation

Kitchen Renovations by Hunter Construction

As a kitchen renovation company here in Columbus, Ohio, we get the same question quite a lot. From homeowners who need an estimate to those who are just starting to do their research, everyone wants to know how much kitchen remodeling costs.

And we usually have to give the same answer – it almost always depends.

Why? Because it depends on so many factors that it’s impossible to provide a generic quote. It depends on the size of your kitchen, how much work needs to be done, whether or not you’re changing plumbing locations, types and quality of materials (countertops, flooring, etc.)  and the list goes on and on.

We’ve done minimal remodeling projects where the original cabinets remained, the flooring was re-surfaced, and we updated fixtures and paint and counters for just a few thousand dollars. And on our high-end kitchen renovations, we’d go all out with custom Amish cabinets, state-of-the-art fixtures, granite counters, all new stone flooring, etc. and the homeowners spent over $100,000. (See our Kitchen Renovation Gallery here.)

So, if you’d like to know how much it would be to remodel your kitchen… give us a call! We’d love to come out to your home and see what all needs to be done. And we’ll get you an estimate based on what you need done and your budget.
